Jason Bourne's hacking scene

7 Ways Jason Bourne Makes a Hacking Scene Feel Like a Chase

A man sitting at a computer should not be able to compete with a rooftop pursuit or a speeding car for tension, but Jason Bourne gets surprisingly close. When Bourne reaches Christian Dassault’s Berlin hideout and starts searching through the files Nicky Parsons uncovered, the CIA is already trying to find him from thousands of miles away.

From there, the scene borrows the basic mechanics of a chase and translates them into screens, cameras, and remote access. Bourne is trying to reach the information he wants before Heather Lee reaches his computer, while Robert Dewey has a team moving toward the building. Nobody has to run very far for the walls to start closing in.

1. The CIA is already racing toward Bourne

The scene wastes little time establishing that Bourne is on borrowed time. Once the CIA learns he has surfaced in Berlin, Dewey orders a team into motion while analysts start figuring out exactly where he has gone.

That gives everything Bourne does at the computer a deadline. He may look relatively calm, but somewhere outside the room people are already moving toward him. The movie has essentially started a pursuit before Bourne even realizes one is underway.

2. CCTV lets Heather watch him in real time

The distance between Berlin and the CIA disappears as soon as Heather gets access to the building’s camera feed. Suddenly, Bourne is not just a name appearing on a screen. The people hunting him can watch him sitting at Dassault’s computer.

It is a clever substitute for the familiar movie image of someone checking over their shoulder. Bourne does not know exactly how closely he is being watched, but the audience does. Every extra second he spends searching gives Heather more time to figure out what he is doing.

3. Heather finds a way into the room without entering it

Heather’s next move makes the scene feel even smaller. She notices a phone near the computer and realizes she can use it as a way into Dassault’s system.

That changes the geography of the chase. The CIA team may still be minutes away, but Heather no longer needs to physically reach Bourne to interfere with him. The device sitting a few feet away becomes her route into the room, and something Bourne barely notices suddenly becomes the biggest threat to his search.

4. Bourne finds something he cannot simply walk away from

The files become much more important when Bourne discovers information about his father, Richard Webb. Then he hears a recording addressed to David, the identity he had before becoming Jason Bourne.

That personal discovery keeps him at the computer longer than simple curiosity probably would. Bourne came looking for answers about his past, and now those answers seem to be sitting directly in front of him. The closer Heather gets, the harder it becomes for him to leave.

5. Dassault turns the search into a second race

Christian Dassault wants something completely different from the files. He sees them as evidence that should be released publicly, while Bourne is focused on learning what they reveal about his own history.

Their disagreement suddenly gives Bourne another problem inside the room. The CIA is approaching digitally and physically from outside, while Dassault is pushing against him from only a few feet away. What began as one man searching a computer now has three sides fighting over the same information.

6. One final firewall becomes the countdown clock

By the later stretch of the sequence, Heather’s progress can be reduced to a wonderfully simple line: one more firewall.

It does the same job as a countdown in a more conventional chase. Bourne knows the files are still there, Heather is getting closer to them, and the audience understands that whichever side finishes first controls what happens next. The screen itself becomes the finish line.

7. Heather reaches Bourne before her team does

Heather eventually gets through and deletes the files, but the scene does not stop there. Instead, she uses the phone to speak directly to Bourne and tells him she knows he has been retracing his Treadstone history.

That is the payoff to everything the scene has been building. Heather has found Bourne, taken away the information he was searching through, and opened a direct line to him without ever stepping into the building. Dewey then takes over the conversation and tries his own approach. The Berlin team is still on the way, but by that point the remote chase has already reached Bourne first.
