The Wolf and Puss in Boots in The Last Wish

7 Movie Tricks That Make Death Feel So Different in Puss in Boots

Puss usually treats danger like he has an audience. He grins, poses, talks himself up, and assumes he’ll come out looking good. But The Wolf is the first character in The Last Wish (2022) who simply isn’t impressed, and you can feel Puss running out of his usual moves as their conversation goes on.

There isn’t one trick doing all the work, either. The scene borrows from old Westerns, changes the way the characters move, tightens up the camera work, and suddenly lets huge patches of red take over the screen. Even Death’s posture and eyes were tweaked to make him feel a little wrong next to everyone else.

1. The bar suddenly turns into a spaghetti Western

Joel Crawford’s love of Sergio Leone is all over Death’s entrance. The scene slows down, the pauses get longer, and we start getting the kind of tight close-ups Leone loved. There’s even a shot of Puss’ paw twitching beside his rapier like a gunslinger waiting to draw. Crawford has pointed to both The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West when talking about how the Wolf was introduced.

2. The whistle isn’t supposed to sound scary by itself

That little tune works partly because there’s almost nothing to it. Crawford said they specifically wanted a whistle that wasn’t inherently frightening. The movie teaches you to be nervous about it by attaching it to the Wolf, so eventually a few notes are enough. The idea was partly inspired by the harmonica in Once Upon a Time in the West, another sound that tells you somebody is coming before you actually see them.

3. Death moves more smoothly than Puss

This is one of those things you may feel without consciously spotting it. The Last Wish often uses stepped animation, holding poses for multiple frames to give Puss a punchier, almost hand-drawn quality. Around the Wolf, the filmmakers could switch back toward smoother animation on ones. Crawford described that contrast as a way of pulling Puss out of his larger-than-life fantasy and into something that suddenly feels much more grounded.

4. The camera stops making Puss look cool

Earlier, the camera can happily sweep along behind Puss while he performs like the hero of his own movie. Crawford has talked about those long, smooth shots making the opening feel safe and choreographed. In the cantina, that confidence goes away. The editing gets quicker, the framing gets tighter, and Puss suddenly looks like the one trying to keep up.

5. The movie lets color red take over the screen

Once Puss realizes the Wolf is different, The Last Wish briefly stops caring about realistic color. Red floods the background for a beat, more like an illustration of what Puss is feeling than normal lighting in a bar. Visual effects supervisor Mark Edwards said those monochromatic bursts were used very sparingly across the movie, which is probably why this one lands as hard as it does.

6. Death’s eyes are weird on purpose

The Wolf doesn’t have the usual rounded animated eyes. Edwards said the design is much more graphic and almost two-dimensional, without a traditional iris. The filmmakers pushed the red even further during color grading. It’s a small choice, but close-ups suddenly have a completely different texture when you’re looking at a face that doesn’t quite follow the same rules as everybody else’s.

7. They gave him extra controls just to make him hunch

Death already had a sharp, diamond-heavy design, but the animators kept experimenting with his silhouette during this first scene. One addition was a special rig control that let them give him a much deeper hunch. So when he bends toward Puss and seems to swallow up more of the frame, that wasn’t just a lucky pose. They had literally built the character to let him loom that way.
