5 Stars Like Harrison Ford And McConaughey Before Their Big Break

Many people have probably wondered: Why does everyone know Matthew McConaughey? The easy answer is that he’s an established actor, known for countless memorable roles. But becoming someone everyone recognizes didn’t happen overnight. How did Benedict Cumberbatch end up becoming Doctor Strange? How did Harrison Ford go from a young actor to Han Solo?

Before they became household names, Oscar winners, action stars, and Hollywood icons, they were simply young actors trying to get noticed. Some were barely out of their teens, while others had already spent years taking small roles without knowing what was coming next. Looking back at these movies now makes the surprise even better: the stars were already there, long before we knew their names.

Matthew McConaughey was only 23 when he landed the role of Wooderson in Dazed and Confused. At the time, he was a film student at the University of Texas in Austin, and the role was his first appearance in a feature film. What started as a small part became his breakthrough, turning a chance meeting with the film’s casting director into the beginning of a major Hollywood career.

When Harrison Ford appeared in American Graffiti in 1973, he was 31 and still far from becoming one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. He had spent years taking small and sometimes uncredited roles and had even turned to carpentry when acting wasn’t providing enough work. As Bob Falfa, he was still four years away from the role that would change everything: Han Solo.

Billy Zane was still in the early stages of his career when he appeared as one of Biff’s friends in Back to the Future in 1985. He was 19 at the time, with only a handful of screen credits behind him. It would be more than a decade before audiences around the world knew him as the impeccably dressed villain from Titanic.

When Benedict Cumberbatch appeared in Atonement in 2007, he was still a relatively unfamiliar British actor building his résumé one supporting role at a time. He was 30 when the movie came out, just a few years before Sherlock turned him into an international star. Looking at him here, it is easy to forget that the globally recognizable Cumberbatch was still waiting around the corner.

Milla Jovovich was just 17 years old when she appeared in Dazed and Confused in 1993. She was already working as an actress and model, but her career was still in its early stages. Her role was small and ended up being significantly reduced from the original script, giving her only a tiny presence in the finished movie. A few years later, she would become one of the defining action stars of a generation.
